THE HISTORY OF THE WEB

In 1989, the world wide web was invented by Londoner Sir Tim Berners-Lee. As a child, Berners-Lee was intrigued by the mechanisms in toys and eventually went on to work for CERN after graduating from Oxford. While at CERN, Berners-Lee developed a system he named Enquire. Enquire was able to store files that were connected to other files. This technique was dubbed, hypertext. For a period of time, Berners-Lee left CERN and worked at Image Computer Systems Ltd. There, he designed different types of computers, before returning to CERN in 1984. Upon his return, Berners-Lee invented a form of communication that allowed for very different computers with completely different designs to interact with one another. It was in 1989 that the internet was first proposed. Berners-Lee wanted to create a global hyperlink system. The original goal of the internet was to allow for communication between researchers without having to regularly exchange emails. The web was first employed by CERN as a phonebook. However, it quickly evolved into so much more. In 1994 Berners-Lee published the World Wide Web Consortium in the United States. The WEB was based on HTML, URI, and HTTP technologies.
Without the web, I think that the world would not be as incredibly connected as it is today. Communications online allow for people to relate to one another across cultures due to common interests and things that would often not be put on the world’s stage because they are seen as trivial or small. Today, there are countless niche communities or friends and support groups across the world! Although there are negative sites on the internet, I believe that the benefits of knowledge and communication outnumber them. The web gives us the power of connection. From a simple office tool, to a limitless list of websites and connection, the web continues to evolve. It is up to the people to use the web for good and to use this power given to us for good. In the future I think that the web will continue to grow and become more personalized. However, I hope that it doesn’t take the front set in our lives and that society is able to use the web for some but not all communication. Overall, I think that the history of the web is groundbreaking and important. Today, we can take Berners-Lee’s computer communication creation and make our own histories with it!
